Hospitality since 1954 - Our history

From the highest village in the Rhön to Heinrichstrasse in Fulda.

The origin

The Wenzel family comes from the Rhön village of Dalherda, Hesse's highest village. Home-made woodworking once flourished there in the winter months. The men of Dalherda would travel on foot with fully loaded wheelbarrows to sell their products, wooden shoes, cooking spoons and brushes, as far as the Rhine, the Moselle and Alsace.

The relocation

Around 1935, the National Socialist regime made preparations for the construction of the Wildflecken military training area. On April 1, 1938, the town of Dalherda was evacuated and a large part of the residents resettled at Trätzhof near Maberzell. August Wenzel purchased the property on Heinrichstrasse and quickly set about building a house. This was built between 1937 and 1939. In the meantime, the Wenzel family moved to Großenlüder, where they lived until 1945.

The collection

It was not until 1945 that the Wenzel family moved into the newly built house. They were accompanied by refugees and displaced persons. When they moved out again, large city apartments were rented out. The war and the compulsory payment of 1 million Reichsmarks for Hermann Göring shares, which after 1945 were not worth the paper they were written on, prevented the entire property from being built on.

Between 1945 and 1961, the family ran a general store on the ground floor of the house. The rooms on the ground floor were then used as offices and sales space.

Conversion into accommodation

Later, on October 1, 1954, August Wenzel opened the Pension Wenzel. Daughter Irma took over the business in 1988, which she ran successfully until her death in 2005. Since then, Fulda has increasingly developed into a tourist destination. Daughter Miriam then took over the business and ran it until 2015.

In 2021 and 2022, major renovations were carried out. The former Pension Wenzel has been operating under the name HOTEL CENTRAL FULDA operated.
